Winners
SAN JOSE and D.C. UNITED posted the most impressive wins in the first-leg MLS quarterfinal action, beating Kansas City and the MetroStars, respectively, by scores of 2-0. San Jose, which had gone scoreless in four previous home games, got its goals from Dwayne De Rosario and Craig Waibel, while Earnie Stewart and Alecko Eskandarian tallied for D.C. United. STEVE CHERUNDOLO, Hannover 96's 5-foot-6 outside back, scored on a 12-yard header in his team's 2-0 win over Borussia Moenchgladbach in the German First Division. It marked his first Bundesliga goal. The third-straight win for Hannover, in which American Clint Mathis did not see action, moved it into seventh place.
UCLA and VIRGINIA made spectacular comebacks during last weekend's men's college soccer action. UCLA senior Mike Enfield scored a game-tying, bicycle-kick goal with 22 seconds left in regulation to help the Bruins to a 4-3 overtime victory over California. The Bruins celebrated a four-game sweep of Stanford and California. Virginia trailed Duke, 2-0, with less than four minutes to play but took advantage of two Blue Devil ejections and rallied to tie the game on goals Hunter Freeman and John Hartman before Mike Littlefield scored the gamewinner in overtime for a 3-2 Virginia win.
ABBY WAMBACH became only the fourth player in U.S. women's national team history to score five goals in a game, striking for all five goals in the second half of a 5-0 win Saturday over Ireland at Reliant Stadium in Houston.
Losers
ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE AMERICANS had a rough weekend: Keeper Brad Friedel gave up four goals for the second straight game as his Blackburn fell, 4-0, to Chelsea and dropped to last in the standings. Fulham, for which Carlos Bocanegra played 90 and Brian McBride two minutes, lost 2-0 to Aston Villa and is just two points above the relegation zone. Claudio Reyna (Man City) is still injured while neither Tim Howard nor Jonathan Spector saw action in Man U's 2-0 win that ended Arsenal's unbeaten streak at 49 games.
STANDARD LIEGE, with American Oguchi Onyewu making his ninth start of the season, saw its four-game win streak come to an end in the Belgian league with a 1-0 loss to Beerschot three days after a 2-0 loss to Steaua Bucharest in the UEFA Cup. Onyewu also played the full 90 minutes against Steaua.
DANIEL HERNANDEZ missed his first Mexican League game of the season after 11 straight starts when his Necaxa downed Tecos, 1-0, on Sunday. The Texan was serving a suspension for a red card received in the 85th minute of last Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Monterrey. He has also picked up four yellow cards in the Torneo Apertura.
