Alexi Lalas, who was president of the Los Angeles Galaxy when David Beckham signed with the MLS club, says the English star’s loan move to AC Milan will benefit him but it could hurt the Galaxy.
Lalas, who left the Galaxy during the 2008 season, feels Beckham’s stint at San Siro could change his view about returning to the Galaxy, where he has three years left on his contract. “If I was still at the Galaxy, yes, I’d fear it,” Lalas told BBC Radio Five Live. “He has to do what he feels is appropriate for his career.”
Lalas says Beckham’s interests could conflict with those of the Galaxy. “I think he wants to do well with the Galaxy but you only have one career,” he added. “The experience he’s going to have at Milan will benefit him individually. How much it benefits the Galaxy and the people that are ultimately paying the majority of his wages remains to be seen.”
Lalas added that the Galaxy and MLS will go on with or without Beckham. “I hope he comes back rejuvenated,” he said. “but I also hope it doesn’t catch up with him in the middle of the season if he does come back to MLS, that’s a danger and that’s something I’d be wary of.”
