New York
George Keeley (Amsterdam Ave. between 83rd and 84th Streets in Manhattan). It's a relatively new bar just getting its soccer program going but it's a wonderful place for all the following reasons:
1. Doors open completely to street, so it's light and airy on a sunny day.
2. Child-friendly, so we all bring our kids to watch Champions League, World Cup, etc.
3. Best craft-beer selection on Upper West Side, including a cask-conditioned engine, and most domestic craft beers are half price until 8 pm.
4. Very congenial staff, including a Norwich City supporter from New Mexico who is very soccer-knowledgeable (that would be Drew). There actually is some Norwich City gear on the walls.
5. Big screen in back, smaller screens scattered all over the premises. They're broadcasting all games.
Portland, Ore.
Red Wing Cafe (1700 SE 6th Ave., 503-445-9900). A nice coffee shop, where they've installed a big screen to show the games. It's nice if you don't want to go to a bar in the morning (you can still smoke in bars in Oregon).
Salt Lake City
Fiddler's Elbow (1061 E 2100 S, Sugarhouse, 801-463-9393). Every game shown, lots of beers on tap, a clean well-lighted roadhouse that is ''Official Party Zone of RSL.'' TVs everywhere, and they serve food — including pretty darn good omelets!
The Republican (917 S State, 801-595-1916). Reliable soccer haunt, you're liable to find the owner smoking at the end of the bar, near the two new big new TVs brought in for the Cup.
Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.
Cocos Mexican Grill (3906 Us Highway 98 W Ste 10, (850 689-1787).
Sure the sound is not in English and the U.S. is not the ''home team'' at this establishment, but with a brand new HDTV projector, a delicious Margaritta Especial, plenty of chips and salsa (and whatever Latin American dish you want to order), and a former professional soccer player in owner Jean Pierre, you just cannot go wrong before, after or instead of kicking the ball around on the pitch down the street at Helen McCall Park).
