Superliga prize money will likely be a moot theme for D.C. United this year after it lost its second successive home game to Mexican opposition in four days. Coach Tom Soehn was frank about his team’s achievement after falling 3-2 to Cancun-based Atlante.
“There is no sugarcoating anything,” Soehn said. “The performance, especially in the first half, was atrocious. There was no commitment, no passion. We came out flat all over, and that’s unacceptable. Today we accomplished all the things we did when we were 2-7 [in the regular season]. That’s the team we looked like today, and that’s not good enough. I don’t know if we could have contained any team the way we came out. We came out in the second half with a little bit of life, but it’s too late.”
“To me, I thought they were underestimating us a little bit,” Atlante coach Jose Guadalupe Cruz said. “Whenever there is a wounded team like we were, I think you have to be careful.” Atlante had lost its opening game Saturday to Houston, 4-0.
