As Ruud Van Nistelrooy prepares to pack his bags for somewhere, possibly Real Madrid, one of Manchester United’s old guard has gotten back on the comeback trail. Old Trafford legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, out for three seasons with knee problems, slotted home twice against the Orlando Pirates during opening game of Manchester United’s pre-season tour of South Africa. Speaking to Cape Town’s PA Sport, Solskjaer said he wouldn’t rule out a return to South Africa with Norway for the World Cup in 2010. He was quick to add that he isn’t looking too far into the future, either, having set an initial target of returning to the starting lineup in the Red Devil’s opening game against Fulham on Aug. 20. “Age is not a worry for me,” Solskjaer said. “I don’t think I look 33 and I certainly don’t feel 33, so you never know what might happen in the future.” Solskjaer is set to celebrate his 10th anniversary with the club next weekend, during which time he won five league titles, two FA Cups, a League Cup, and of course, the Champions League in 1999, when he scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time. The Manchester United forward emphasized that he is hungry for success this year. “It is now three seasons since we won the Premier League and we cannot afford that run to continue. As a club, Manchester United exists to win trophies,” he added. It’s an important pre-season for United’s youngsters and its ageing players because the World Cup players are now resting. Many of them may prove to be unfit for the start of the season. As Solskjaer points out, “That is when we can step in. We have to be ready.”
