South African Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has said the country is “on track” and within budget to complete all planned transport infrastructure projects in time for the 2010 World Cup, and dismissed fears the country would not be ready to host the tournament.

On a tour of Cape Town construction sites Thursday, Radebe said, “We can see that the money has been put to good use. And although the Western Cape started their transport infrastructural upgrades later than all of the other provinces, Cape Town is on track and has made tremendous progress.

“This is a revolution for transport in South Africa,” Radebe continued. “We are leaving a lasting legacy for the economy, the people and future generations. Come 2010, we will be ready.” He added that if there were any outstanding issues in terms of the budget then “the National Treasury will deal with them. But for now, we don’t foresee any problems.”
