Stern John, who scored 55 goals for the Columbus Crew in 1997-98, scored the gamewinner for Birmingham City against Millwall in its 1-0, second-leg semifinal victory in playoffs to win promotion to the Premier League. Birmingham, which must beat Norwich in the final May 12 to return to the top flight after a 16-year absence, beat Millwall, 2-1, on aggregate. John left the Columbus Crew in November of 1999 for Nottingham Forest, which paid MLS a multi-million transfer fee. He suffered a knee injury shortly after his arrival in England then went on to score 18 goals in 60 league appearances before moving to Birmingham City last February (on a $146,000 transfer). He's scored eight goals in 17 appearances for Birmingham.
