All four Copa America quarterfinals are blowouts

The four semifinalists breezed into the final week of play at the Copa America by beating their opponents by a margin of 20-1 in the quarterfinals. Mexico produced the most one-sided victory, clobbering Paraguay, 6-0. Argentina routed Peru, 4-0, on Sunday with all four goals coming in the second half — two from playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme. On Saturday, Uruguay ended host Venezuela’s dream to reaching the semifinals for the first time with a 4-1 win in the weekend’s only close game. The Celeste led by only a goal until it added two goals in the final three minutes. Brazil thumped Chile, 6-1, to silence the critics of Coach Dunga for his defensive tactics in the first stage of the competition.

U.S. exercise at the Copa America ends pointless

A tough, rugged game against Colombia in which four U.S. players made their first Copa America appearance produced promising moments but nothing more than a 1-0 defeat and an 0-3 record in the competition. Finishing pointless in the standings is also how the entire exercise of taking a young, largely inexperienced team to so prestigious a competition will be deemed: pointless.

Mexico-Chile tie knocks USA out of Copa America

Mexico and Chile played to a 0-0 tie Wednesday at the Copa America — a result that suited both teams nicely and had fans fuming in Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela. The tie clinched first place for Mexico in Group B and put Chile through to the quarterfinals as one of the two best third-place teams. It also eliminated the USA and Colombia, which can only finish with three points if one beats the other in their Group C finale in Thursday. Brazil finished second in Group B with a 1-0 win over Ecuador on Robinho’s fourth goal of the tournament.

USA to play for pride vs. Colombia in Copa

The USA has no chance of advancing to the second round of the Copa America when it meets Colombia on Thursday in Barquisimeto, Venezuela (TeleFutura, GolTV-English, 6:30 pm ET). Yet a case can be argued that sending this pool of U.S. players, many of whom had just a handful of caps if they had any at all, has already attained something. This group is not only a feeder group to the national team, it is also the foundation of the next Olympic team. Would Drew Moor otherwise be even a candidate at right back? Hasn’t this tournament sharpened the wits and talents of Ricardo Clark? Did his dismal appearance as a sub against Argentina consign Eddie Gaven to the nether regions of the player pool? What does the promising yet maddening showing of Justin Mapp mean in the short run as well as long-term?

Group A winner Venezuela advances to Copa America quarterfinals for first time

Venezuela, Uruguay and Peru joined Mexico, Argentina and Paraguay in the quarterfinals of the Copa America when they finished 1-2-3 in Group A. Venezuela clinched the Group A title and a place in the quarterfinals — for the first time in Copa America history — when it held Uruguay to a 0-0 tie Tuesday in the final group match. Striker Claudio Pizarro‘s second goal of the game with five minutes remaining gave 10-man Peru a 2-2 tie with Bolivia in the first game, in which D.C. United’s Jaime Moreno scored his second goal of the tournament.

Scenarios for U.S. advancement at the Copa America

[COPA AMERICA STANDINGS] With two losses in two games, the USA is a longshot to reach the quarterfinals of the Copa America as one of the two third-place teams with the best record. First, it must beat Colombia in their final Group C game on Thursday. Then, it must get help in one of the other groups. Its best shot is if Peru beats or ties Bolivia, the USA would probably advance if it beats Colombia and host Venezuela beats Uruguay by a combined margin of three goals. The USA could also advance if it beats Colombia and Mexico beats Chile by a combined margin of four goals.

Argentina beats Colombia, loses Crespo for tournament

For the second straight game, Argentina brushed aside the minor inconvenience of falling behind on a early goal and recovered to score four goals. Against the USA, the Argentines conceded a penalty kick by Eddie Johnson in the 9th minute yet prevailed, 4-1. Against Colombia on Monday night in Maracaibo, a clever back heel by Edixon Perea put the Argentines in a hole in the 10th minute, but they again recovered to win, 4-2, and join Paraguay and Mexico in the quarterfinals.

What They’re Saying

“I would score 49 out of 50 times. Unfortunately, it was the wrong time to miss it.”

— Drew Moor, whose otherwise encouraging debut at right back for the USA on Monday night was marred by a wide-open header right in front of the Paraguay goal he hit tamely straight to keeper Aldo Bobadilla with the score 2-1 in Paraguay’s favor late in their Copa America match. Minutes later, Paraguay put the game away with a third goal and won, 3-1.

Mexico is first team to reach Copa America quarterfinals

Mexico became the first team to clinch a berth in the quarterfinals of the Copa America when it beat Ecuador, 2-1, on Sunday in Group B. The win was the second in a row for the Mexicans, who opened with a 2-0 win over defending champion and are on top of the group with the six points. Brazil beat Chile, 3-0, thanks to a Robinho hat trick earlier on Sunday to move into a tie for second place with Chile. Venezuela registered its first victory in the Copa America in 40 years when it beat Peru, 2-0, on Saturday. In Saturday’s other Group A game, Uruguay beat Bolivia, 1-0.

USA must put it all together to get a result against Paraguay

[COPA AMERICA PREVIEW] The glaring disparity in talent that was evident when Argentina beat the USA, 4-1, last Thursday won’t be as prevalent Monday when the Americans take on Paraguay in Barinas, Venezuela, yet Paraguay looked tremendous in its 5-0 win against Colombia, playing a fluid, organized game unlike its rigid, defense-first squads at previous World Cups. If the Americans are again rocked back on their heels, they could be chasing the game for longer than they did against Argentina.

What They’re Saying

“I think we impressed a lot of people for 60-65 minutes. The question is, can we do it now for 90 minutes?”

— Veteran goalie Kasey Keller, on his U.S. team that held Argentina even for an hour before collapsing and must put on a more sustained performance in Monday’s game against Paraguay at the Copa America in Venezuela.
