The stark fact that England must face

‘Tis the season to dump on English soccer, so here we go, with the proviso that for about the past decade it has been my contention that the blast and dazzle of the English Premier League has so mesmerized certain fans, managers and players they believe only cheating opponents, diabolic refereeing decisions and haphazard preparations have prevented England from World Cup success.

English hopes brighten thanks to Israeli win

[ISRAEL-RUSSIA] There was gloom and doom last month when England fell to Russia, 2-1, compromising its chances of reaching the Euro ’08 finals. It was all but conceded that England wouldn’t be going — one report calculated the cost to the FA of not making the Euro ’08 finals at tens of millions of dollars — but it was based on the assumption Russia would beat Israel in Tel Aviv. A mistaken assumption, indeed.

[INTERNATIONAL HEADLINERS/VIDEO] Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo may lose out to Brazilian Kaka and Argentine Lionel Messi in balloting for the two year-end international player of the year awards, but he is certainly the class of European soccer, as evidenced by his two superb goals for Manchester United against Blackburn on Saturday. Barcelona’s troubles on the road continued, while Bayern Munich’s slump has put Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld at odds with club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. In Mexico, the Torneo Apertura’s regular season finished, and 10 teams moved into the playoffs.

Referee swears back

Referee Danny McDermid has been charged by the English FA “with using abusive and/or insulting words” toward Leeds United coach Dennis Wise, who claimed that McDermid told him to “f*** off” after Wise cursed at McDermid, who ejected Wise at halftime of a 1-1 tie with Gillingham. McDermid has until Nov. 13 to respond to the charge. The FA suspended Wise for three games and fined him $10,000 protesting the ejection Tresor Kandol, who had received two yellows for dissent.
