It was a year for triumph and tragedy. Champions were crowned on three continents, and a new generation of stars dominated the international club scene. But 2007 was also marked by tragedy as Italian soccer descended into violence.

Mexico’s Sanchez is under the gun at Copa America
[PREVIEW] Gold Cup runner-up Mexico will be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire when it opens Group B play on Wednesday in Puerto Ordaz. After losing yet again to the United States, Mexico must face defending champion Brazil to open the Copa America (TV: Univision, Gol TV-English, live, 8:30 pm ET). Mexico will be without five starters from the Gold Cup final. To make matters worse, Coach Hugo Sanchez is under intense criticism from the press in both Mexico and the United States.
Gold Cup attendance average up by 11,000
The attendance average for the 2007 Gold Cup’s 13 game days was 37,598, an increase of more than 11,000 from the previous championship tournament of North and Central America and the Caribbean. The 2007 attendance average was the highest since 1993, when the USA co-hosted the tournament with Mexico. The 2005 was also co-hosted; the USA was lone host for the other seven Gold Cups. For Gold Cup attendance history:
Two Americans on Gold Cup All-Tournament Team
Before the most important game of the Gold Cup – that would be the final – the CONCACAF Technical Study Group named its 2007 Gold Cup All-Tournament Team, which includes two members of the championship U.S. team. They are defender Frankie Hejduk, who missed the final with a yellow-card suspension, and Pablo Mastroeni, who was subbed at halftime in the final. Americans Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley were selected as “Honorable Mentions” by the Technical Study Group.
USA-Mexico game is third most-viewed sports event in Univision history
The Univision broadcast of the USA-Mexico Gold Cup final was third most-viewed Spanish-language sports telecast of all time with 5,340,000 viewers, according to the “fast national” ratings of U.S. households from Nielsen. Only last summer’s Mexico-Argentina match at the World Cup and February’s Mexico-USA game in Arizona had a larger audience on Univision. Last Thursday’s Mexico-Guadeloupe in the Gold Cup semifinals was viewed by 4,024,000 persons age 2+ on TeleFutura, making the most-viewed program of any kind on that network.
Building on the Gold Cup victory
Capturing the Gold Cup may not mean much beyond the far-flung boundaries of CONCACAF. Of the regional titles first comes the European Championship, then the Copa America, with the Gold Cup, Asian Cup and African Cup of Nations trailing in their wake. But for a team and program in transition, and a head coach unbeaten yet still unproven in the minds of many, parading a golden garden planter around Soldier Field to a largely Mexican audience will more than suffice. More than three weeks of training and competitive play, of sharing rooms and meals and bus trips, lays a foundation for the future.
Resilient Americans prevail in a Superclasico
Add a comeback 2-1 win against its archrival and another Gold Cup title to the USA ledger. Add a squandered 1-0 halftime lead to Mexico’s record of futility north of the border. Add another feather to the headdress of Bob Bradley, whose unbeaten record as U.S. head coach is 10-0-1 heading into the Copa America. Add Benny Feilhaber’s searing winner to the list of best U.S. goals, and the landmark occasion of Landon Donovan tying Eric Wynalda atop the all-time goalscoring list at 34. USA ousts Canada, welcomes Mexico
This U.S. team insists on winning dangerously, but it does keep winning. Whether by external forces or by its own design the USA is finishing matches in the bunker, not in the driver’s seat. Not for the first time in this Gold Cup did the Americans score early, assume control, and then scramble frantically to preserve a victory that seemed be a formality. From Chicago, Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney reports on the 2-1 semifinal win over Canada, which sets up a U.S. Gold Cup final clash with archrival Mexico …

The hat tricks keep on coming! Brad Davis scored three goals in the second half for his first career hat trick to lead the Houston Dynamo past Chivas USA, 4-0, Thursday night at Robertson Stadium. Both teams went into the game with three-game winning streaks, but the Dynamo prevailed to move ahead of Chivas into second place in the Western Conference, three points behind leader FC Dallas, which has played two more games.

Univision’s broadcast of Thursday’s Mexico-Panama game delivers
Univision has been showing Mexico’s Gold Cup games for a reason. Rather than diverting the Tri’s first four matches to Galavision or TeleFutura, Univision aired them live. In the case of last Thursday’s primetime showing of Mexico-Panama, the game did a 20.1 household rating in the NHTI (Hispanic homes), delivering 2,343,000 Hispanic homes and 4,374,000 Hispanic persons 2+ for each average minute. Most impressive was the Gold Cup group match’s appeal to men 18-49. In that all-important demographic, the game drew 1,959,000 viewers, more than any other television program that evening on any U.S. TV network.
Tiny Guadeloupe shocks Honduras to set up date with Mexico in Gold Cup semifinals
Jocelyn Angloma, the 41-year-old former French international, did it again, scoring his second goal of the Gold Cup to help tiny French department Guadeloupe knock off Honduras, 2-1, and advance to the semifinals, where it faces Mexico on Thursday at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Once again, Mexico put on a subpar performance, but it escaped from Houston’s Reliant Stadium with a 1-0 win in overtime over Costa Rica, which finished the game with eight players. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium, Canada cruised past Guatemala, 3-0.
USA wastes chances but reaches Gold Cup semis
This game could have been over by halftime, or at the very least put away with eight minutes left; instead the USA sweated out several minutes of stoppage time before the referee’s whistle extinguished the flickering hopes of Panama, 2-1, in the Gold Cup quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Panama aims to end American hex
Twice in the recent past Panama has stretched the United States nearly to the breaking point. Saturday at Gillette Stadium (4 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel, Univision) Panama will get a chance to finally snap the American hex against it in the first big competitive test of the U.S. national team under Bob Bradley. The U.S. is 4-0-2 against Panama and has won the last four games by shutout. Yet there have been a few close calls.

USA to face tricky Panama in Gold Cup quarterfinals
The USA-Mexico showdown at the Gold Cup will have to wait for later. Mexico again struggled but held off Panama, 1-0, on Wednesday in Houston to finish second in Group C and avoid a date with the USA in the quarterfinals. Instead, it’s Panama, one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament, that Bob Bradley‘s Americans will meet in a difficult quarterfinal test.
