[TV PREVIEW] The Wizards have been slowly losing ground to a chasing pack of teams close behind them, and far more than a formality against the league’s worst team, this match is vital to their playoff hopes. After hosting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake sets out on a four-game road swing; if wants to take any momentum into the final month of the season with University of Utah football in full swing, it needs a strong showing.

What They’re Saying
“This ridiculous schedule that we have been saddled with in an effort to appease everybody, on and off the field, has taken its toll. We have bent over backwards to help everybody but the Galaxy. A lot of people have made a tremendous amount of money on the back of what the Galaxy, with David, has brought to their markets this year and I hope that they remember that. The traveling, the number of games, the lack of consistent scheduling – no other team has had to put up with that.”
— Los Angeles Galaxy President Alexi Lalas, after his team’s fifth straight MLS loss, complains about a schedule that bunched Galaxy games into the latter part of the season in order to exploit David Beckham‘s drawing power throughout the league. (Times of London)
FC Dallas’ bet on Denilson makes sense
Remember the wails of anguish from FC Dallas fans and a few pundits back in March when “negotiations” broke off with Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids? The two sides never got very close, according to a source. FC Dallas had offered in the neighborhood of $800,000; Davids had a sum closer to $2.5 million in mind, give or take a few guilders. There were some who believed Davids could be the missing piece to the puzzle of FCD finally reaching an MLS Cup. That was wishful thinking, since at the time, perhaps only Coach Steve Morrow had an idea what that puzzle might eventually look like.
A drastic revamping of the team’s midfield had already begun and would soon accelerate: Ronnie O’Brien and Simo Valakari, and eventually, Richard Mulrooney and Ramon Nunez, out; Juan Toja and Pablo Ricchetti, and just last week, Denilson, in.
Red-hot Rapids add to Galaxy woes
[MLS WEEKEND REPORT] New England and D.C. United pull away from the pack atop the Eastern Conference; Toronto sets futility record; Red Bulls’ keeper Jon Conway gives up long-distance own goal; the Fire edges closer to the playoff octet by winning again, thanks to Cuauhtemoc Blanco; the 10-man Crew escapes from Houston with a point; Colorado pulls even with Columbus by rolling over the sorry Galaxy; and Chivas USA continued its dominance at home. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney recaps the weekend’s MLS action …
Hamm, Foudy, Rothenberg & Smith in Hall of Fame
[PROFILES] Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Alan Rothenberg and Bobby Smith were inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Sunday. …
Brazilian ball wizard Denilson joins FC Dallas
Denilson, who in 1998 set a transfer fee record with a $40 million move from Sao Paulo to Spanish club Real Betis, has been signed by FC Dallas. The 29-year-old, who played in 12 World Cup games for Brazil in its 1998 runner-up finish and its 2002 title win, arrives from Saudi Arabian club Al-Nasr. Denilson becomes the fourth World Cup winner in MLS. The other three all played for Red Bulls/Metros: Lothar Matthaeus (Germany 1990), Branco (Brazil 1994) and Youri Djorkaeff (France 1998).
D.C. aims to add to Toronto woes
[MLS WEEKEND TV PREVIEW] Five intra-conference games are featured this weekend, with the only crossover game sending Columbus to Western leader Houston. In the East, D.C. heads north to Canada where FC Toronto could set a league record in scoring futility, first-place New England hosts New York, and Kansas City plays Chicago for the second time in four days. Chivas USA stays at HDC to play Real Salt Lake, and the Galaxy Futility Tour heads to Colorado.
Beckham back but Galindo grabs the glory
Not for the first time, the man who’d survived the most arduous journey to reach Home Depot Center stole the show. Maykel Galindo came to Chivas USA via Seattle and all the piles of paperwork necessary to properly process a Cuban defector who’d left his national team 2 ½ years ago during the Gold Cup. He put away two goals of exquisite class as Chivas USA (10-6-3) embarrassed Los Angeles, 3-0, to cast the Galaxy’s playoff hopes deeper in doubt. David Beckham lasted the full 90 after going the distance the day before in England’s loss to Germany. It was Beckham’s third full game in a six days, a stretch that began with Saturday’s loss in New York, and he was limping by the game’s end.
Historic Night for Jaime
Jaime Moreno set a league goalscoring record as D.C. United won a crucial conference match over New York. Many of his goals (33) the past few years have been penalties, yet on the historic night of his 109th MLS goal, Moreno did much more than just convert from the spot. His flicks and touches and dummies unhinged the Red Bull New York backline as D.C. (11-6-3) rolled to a 3-1 victory at RFK Stadium.
Kansas City overcomes Cuauhtemoc
The Wizards scrambled to contain Cuauhtemoc Blanco, whose passes led to a pair of goals, but produced three goals of their own thanks to Jose Burciaga Jr. to beat Chicago, 3-2.
Stars zoom home for Los Angeles clasico
[TV PREVIEW] U.S. coach Bob Bradley did his MLS counterparts Frank Yallop and Preki a favor. England coach Steve McLaren wasn’t so accommodating. Bradley pulled off Landon Donovan and Jonathan Bornstein during the USA’s 1-0 loss to Sweden, but McLaren played David Beckham the full 90 minutes of England’s 2-1 home defeat against Germany. All three are expected to be back at Home Depot Center for this edition of the Los Angeles-Chivas USA derby; yet to be determined is how much, if at all, they can play.
MLS midweek doubleheader kicks off stretch run
[TV PREVIEWS] Two months remain in the regular season and only Real Salt Lake is without a real chance to make the playoffs. A nine-game slate of league action this week gets underway with Big Wednesday: a pair of crucial Eastern Conference matchups. D.C. United-New York and Kansas City-Chicago.
Beckham ‘ready’ for Germany
Despite his injured ankle, the Los Angeles Galaxy’s David Beckham aims to play in England’s friendly against Germany on Wednesday (TV live: 3 pm ET Setanta pay-per-view; delay: 5 pm ET Fox Soccer Channel & Fox Sports en Espanol). "He trained this morning and looked very, very good," said England coach Steve McClaren on Tuesday. If Beckham plays, he’ll earn his 97th cap.
Central issues for West-leading Dynamo
Houston keeper Pat Onstad earned his eighth shutout and the Dynamo regained first place in the Western Conference by beating in-state rival FC Dallas, 1-0, Sunday, yet a few times the Dynamo escaped despite soft defending in the middle.
Stoking the Fire
Chicago coach Juan Carlos Osorio has brought a new player who should shore up one of the team’s weak spots. Colombian international defender Wilman Conde, 24, comes to MLS from Colombia’s Millonarios, which Osorio coached for 18 months prior to joining the Fire in late June. Conde takes a senior international slot on the team’s roster and in exchange, a youth international slot has opened up with the release of Brazilian Willian Oliveira.
Wings of an Angel
Here’s Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo‘s take on New York’s Juan Pablo Angel: “He’s been an unbelievably great addition to the league.” Angel earned the Red Bulls three points in their incredible 5-4 win over the Galaxy Saturday with hustle, desire and skill.
New York’s goal rush
[VIDEO] The New York Red Bulls’ 5-4 win over Los Angeles on Saturday marked the 10th MLS game in league history in which nine or more goals were scored. The Red Bulls (nee MetroStars) were involved in five of those games – four victories and one tie. For highlights of New York’s 5-4 win over Beckham and the Galaxy, click HERE.
MLS enjoys attendance boost
Last weekend’s six MLS games averaged nearly 26,000 fans, upping the leaguewide attendance average to 15,836. The highest regular-season attendance since the inaugural season’s 17,406 was 15,822 in 2002. Last weekend’s biggest crowd was the 66,237 at the Beckham game at New York Red Bull, but games at Toronto, Columbus, Salt Lake and Houston had announced attendance of more than 18,000. … Luciano Emilio‘s goal against Columbus upped his league-leading total to 14. … New York’s five goals against L.A. upped its goal-per-game production to a league-leading 1.70.
What They’re Saying
“It’s our job when people show up to give them a reason to come back. Hopefully we converted a few people tonight.”
— New York Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena, whose team beat the Los Angeles Galaxy and David Beckham, 5-4, in front of 66,237 fans at Giants Stadium. The Red Bulls had averaged 11,573 fans for their previous 10 home games of the season. (Newsday)
Beckham, Blanco and Angel deliver
[MLS WEEKEND REPORT] David Beckham, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Juan Pablo Angel deliver on a great day for the Designated Players: The Red Bulls outlast the Galaxy in a nine-goalapalooza; Houston beats Dallas to regain top spot in the West; New England widens its Eastern lead by beating Kansas City again; Chicago wins in Utah to tighten up the playoff race; D.C. dumps the Crew; and Chivas USA extends Toronto’s drought.
The Rapids rip Revs
Don’t write off the Rapids just yet. Jovan Kirovksi scored twice and Colin Clark sliced up New England in a 3-0 romp that pushed Colorado to within two points of a playoff spot. Kirovksi smashed home a rebound in the 10th minute and later in the first half tucked away a penalty resulting from a Jay Heaps foul on Clark, who in the second half hit a long ball that Omar Cummings blasted into the net for his first MLS goal.
MLS Midseason Report
The Eastern Conference is loaded, but the best team(s) may be out west. Houston, New England and D.C. United look like the most likely champions with one half of the season to be played, yet a few others are impossible to dismiss.
His debut done, Becks faces staggering task
The MLS debut of David Beckham harshly illustrated the incongruities plaguing his new team and what he perhaps can do to resolve its myriad problems. During a runout of about 20 minutes in a 1-0 loss to D.C. United at RFK Thursday, he swerved a threatening free kick that produced a good chance, and flighted another immaculate ball into space that on another night would have yielded a goal or a penalty kick rather than a spectacular defensive play. Sparked by Beckham and a fresh pair of forwards following a straight red-card to Kyle Martino for nailing Fred from behind, Team Beckham actually looked like a soccer team, much more so than it had without him while tying Toronto, 0-0, on Sunday. Play badly and tie, play better and lose, that’s soccer.
Colorado Rapids humiliated by Seattle Sounders in Open Cup
[VIDEO] The Seattle Sounders handed MLS’s Colorado Rapids the worst defeat any MLS team has ever suffered in the U.S. Open Cup against any opposition when the USL First Division club won, 5-0, in quarterfinal action on Tuesday night. The historic victory gave USL two semifinalists for only the second time in the history of the tournament as the expansion Carolina RailHawks defeated the defending USL Second Division champion Richmond Kickers, 1-0.
Possession or no possession
Watching Matt Reis have a ball kicked from his grasp, which is specifically prohibited by the rules, into the net for the winning goal in D.C. United’s 3-0 win over the Revs last weekend brought back memories of a conversation with U.S. keeper Kasey Keller regarding his days with English League club Millwall.
