MLS launches free summer kids soccer program

Major League Soccer has launched a summer youth program, “Verano MLS,” that will provide 8- to 12-year-olds venues for twice-a-week pick-up-style soccer and “an opportunity to meet MLS players and coaches.” The six-week program, overseen by Colombian World Cup veteran Wilmer Cabrera, who is MLS’s Manager of Fan Development, debuts in Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. The program, part of the league’s outreach to the USA’s Hispanic community, offers children a Verano MLS adidas soccer ball, a Verano MLS adidas T-shirt and a complimentary MLS game ticket for themselves and members of their family.

Streaking MLS teams clash in Thursday night action

[TV PREVIEW] Houston and Chivas USA, both in the midst of three-game winning streaks, clash in ESPN2’s Thursday Night MLS game. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear figured he’d lose midfielders Dwayne DeRosario (Canada) and Ricardo Clark (USA) and forward Brian Ching (USA) during the Gold Cup, but he wasn’t expecting the emergency call-up of keeper Pat Onstad to the Canadian team.

Crew looks to tighten D against KC

[TV PREVIEW] Two teams coming off six-goal games last weekend figure to tighten things up, so there might be a repeat of their May 5 meeting (1-0). Jose Burciaga slalomed through the Crew to score the only goal of the game in the 90th minute to end a Crew three-game shutout streak. That was also the game in which Ricardo Virtuoso’s shoulder cracked the jaw of Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad and Guillermo Barros Schelotto debuted for the Crew. Columbus is a much different team than it was then, which it showed last week by rallying from two goals down to snatch a 3-3 tie with the Revs at Gillette Stadium.

MLS finally delivers goalfests

[VIDEO] Concerns about goalscoring in MLS were allayed somewhat in a high-scoring weekend (27 goals in six games), as excellent finishes punished errors, some large, some small. All goals, many say, stem from errors, but mistakes this season seem to be more costly, and forwards last weekend were especially efficient on breakaways. Are teams punishing defensive errors more ruthlessly?

High scores and high drama in MLS

Eastern Conference teams scored 20 goals in their four games as D.C. United belted Chicago, Toronto derailed Dallas in a battle of the FCs, and six-goal deadlocks resulted from the New York-Kansas City and New England-Columbus tussles. In the West, Chivas USA extended Colorado’s losing streak to three matches, and the Galaxy knocked off RSL in the battle of the basement. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney reports on last weekend’s MLS action.

David Beckham and Roberto Carlos leave Real Madrid with league title

David Beckham and Roberto Carlos departed Real Madrid as champions on Sunday when the Merengues won Spain’s La Liga title for the 30th time with a 3-1 victory over Real Mallorca at the Bernabeu Stadium. Real Madrid finished tied with Barcelona, a 5-1 winner over Gimnastic Tarragona, but captured the tie by virtue of its advantage in the tiebreaker (head-to-head play).

Same old outcome for FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake

Whoops, they did it again. For the third time this season, Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas fought a close game, and once again, a slice of superb finishing denied RSL the result it knew it deserved. Dominic Oduro drilled a low shot just inside the far post two minutes into stoppage time to beat RSL, 1-0, Thursday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. RSL coach Jason Kreis was ejected for vehemently protesting a collision he believed merited at least a RSL free kick

Toronto FC trades Buddle to Galaxy for suspended Marshall

Toronto FC’s wheeling and dealing continued Wednesday when it traded Edson Buddle to the Los Angeles Galaxy for Jamaican national team defender Tyrone Marshall. The deal came the same day MLS suspended Marshall three games and fined him $1,500 for a tackle on FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper in the 89th minute of the Galaxy’s game on June 9. Cooper’s leg was broken on the play that resulted in a red card for Marshall.

Efficient U.S. attack overruns El Salvador at the Gold Cup

The Gold Cup is derided for its slipshod organization and paltry promotion in English-language outlets, but as a competitive event, in many respects it stands up. Case in point: For all the importance placed on a team winning its first game, just doing so is no guarantee of advancement, even with two of the three third-place teams qualifying for the quarterfinals along with the top two in each group. El Salvador opened with a 2-1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago the same day the USA scraped past Guatemala, 1-0, at Home Depot Center. By the time they met at Gillette Stadium Tuesday, the Americans were rolling and the Salvadorans reeling. Result: 4-0 to the USA, thanks to a DaMarcus Beasley blinder (scored two goals, set up another), single tallies by Taylor Twellman and Landon Donovan, and the Salvadorans’ bothersome habit of misfiring on the few chances they had to claw their way back into the competition.

“There is no intention of getting out of the Galaxy deal, or reneging on the Galaxy deal.”
— Simon Oliveira, David Beckham‘s agent. Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon was quoted as saying he would try to persuade the England star to stay with the Spanish team in Spain, using an escape clause in Beckham’s Galaxy contract to back out of the deal. Absences cast doubt on Honduras’ chances

[GOLD CUP PREVIEW] On paper, Honduras has more talent than any team in the Gold Cup except Mexico and the United States, but absences and injuries have taken their toll. Among others, star David Suazo, rumored to be headed to Inter Milan from Cagliari, is injured and unavailable for the Gold Cup. Julio Cesar “Rambo” Leon, another Italian-based player, will miss the Bicolor’s first two games against Panama and Mexico because of Genoa’s Serie B promotion playoff against Napoli on Sunday.

Shaky U.S. win not much to build on

Only in light of the fact the U.S. can play erratically against a regional minnow and still win can any satisfaction be derived from its 1-0 victory over Guatemala in the Group B opener of the Gold Cup at Home Depot Center Thursday night. Guatemala had scraped out a 0-0 tie when the teams met in late March and threatened a few times to do the same after falling behind to a Clint Dempsey goal in the 26th minute set up by his former New England teammate Taylor Twellman. The USA can take some credit for preserving the victory against a spunky opponent and enduring the final 17 minutes a man short, but too often it frantically scrapped and flailed, rather than using its superior class to govern the tempo.

Depleted Dynamo still strong enough to zap Rapids

Every team needs a Stuart Holden, a local lad with talent and spirit and a willingness to work his way off the reserve squad, onto the regular 18, and occasionally onto the field. Holden, who had played just 78 minutes this season prior to Houston’s game with Colorado Thursday, scored the winning goal just seconds after replacing Chris Wondolowski as Houston downed Colorado, 2-1, for its second straight victory despite missing five players because of national-team duty or injury.
