USA-Canada Women’s Coverage

Dominant USA prevails in OT
Efficiency in the final third may have been lacking, yet still the U.S. women endured some nervous moments in their Olympic quarterfinal against rival Canada and prevailed, 2-1, in overtime. Angela Hucles and Christine Sinclair scored in regulation, which ended 1-1 after heavy rain and lightning forced play to be suspended for 99 minutes. Eleven minutes into overtime, substitute Natasha Kai — at least a tad offside when Shannon Boxx lofted a cross in her direction — stooped to head the ball past Canadian keeper Karina LeBlanc from point-blank range to provide the winning margin.

Olympic failure was in the cards for U.S. men

[RECAP] When Californian Michael Orozco made his Mexican First Division debut in 2006 at age 20, he was red-carded two minutes after he came off the bench. Every member joined in to play melodic passages, and with a pair of Freddy Adu free kicks and a stirring, sweeping movement that Sasha Kljestan ended with a sharp, stinging arpeggio did the USA beat Canada, 3-0, to confirm its August reservation in China.

USA stumbles on Olympic quest

A disappointing 1-1 tie with Cuba in the opening game of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers leaves the Americans tied with the Cubans in second place and pondering changes borne by practicality more than necessity. Freddy Adu marked an opening period of USA dominance by curling home a shot in the 14th minute but a Cuban revival and a moment of laxity in the American defense enabled Yordany Alvarez to drive a low ball that Roberto Linares redirected past keeper Chris Seitz three minutes before halftime.
