D.C. United head coach Thomas Rongen on Ben Olsen’s winning goal: “That wasn’t scripted. Anything Ben touches isn’t scripted. His resilience and popping up in the right place is just great — just pure heart and desire.” Rongen on close game: “I was a little disappointed not going in 2-0 or 3-0 up at halftime. We could have comfortably been up one or two goals and in the end it became a battle which we could have prevented.” Olsen on winning goal: “Bobby [Convey] sent us a good ball. Chris [Albright] makes that goal. He hit the near post drawing two defenders and the goalie and it slipped through to me for the goal.” Chris Albright: “I thought we dominated the game — no question. I didn’t think there was need for it to be a 90-minute thriller. But it was a good test.” Eddie Pope: “WeÆve worked hard over the last couple of months on our defense and trying to be solid in the back. I think it was a good performance.” Pope II: “We had a bad season last year. Everybody is pretty much fed up, and this is an opportunity for us to prepare for our season, but also do something a little special.” Los Angeles Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid: “I was please with how we played. We basically dominated the game and we were able to do some things well at times, but at the end of the day we didn’t score a goal when we needed to score a goal. I thought we gave up very few chances to them and I felt we bottled them up very well.” Schmid on the next match, vs. D.C. United: “We are looking forward to it. We are happy to be on to the next round. In all the years that I have coached, I have never tried to say ‘I would rather play this team or that team’, its like when you are in a tournament like this you play whoever’s up next and D.C. United is up next.” Schmid on MLS sending a representative to the Club World Championship: “I think it’s great. We are one step ahead of Mexico right now because we are assured of getting a team to the World Club Championship. One of the things that I think is important for American soccer is that we get the respect that the quality of our play deserves.” Simon Elliott: “Once again, L.A. Galaxy vs. D.C. United for all the marbles. So, it should be interesting, it should be a cracker. It’s good for the players and the league and it gives them something to aim for. You know there’s some top class international soccer at the end of this road. It is a huge incentive, even more so than the money, which is nice.”
