TOLUCA (Mexico) vs. OLIMPIA (Honduras) Toluca has been the most successful club in Mexico over the past three years, winning three short-season titles (in 1998, 1999 and 2000), and just falling short in the recently completed 2000 Invierno championship, losing in the playoff finals to Morelia on penalties. The Red Devils have struggled in the early going of the Verano tournament, losing to Pachuca, 5-3, at home, then suffering through a dour scoreless draw with Puebla. KEY MAN: Jose Cardozo — Paraguayan international who will stay with Toluca after being rumored to move to Spain. Had a poor winter campaign — until exploding for a record eight goals in the Liguilla. Olimpia enters the tournament in fine form as it chases a record 15th Honduran championship. It drew with Platense, 0-0, to end the Apertura, finishing 10 points ahead of archrival Motagua, which defeated it in the final of the Honduras championship last season. Olimpia opened the current campaign with 10 victories in their first 10 matches, one shy of their Liga Nacional record, before Real Espa±a ended the streak on Nov. 30. KEY MAN: Denilson Costa — Became the all-time leading goalscorer in Honduras history earlier this year, he will be expected to bear the brunt of OlimpiaÆs goal production after the transfer of Wilmer Velasquez to Atlas in Mexico. PACHUCA (Mexico) vs. JOE PUBLIC (Trin. & Tobago) Pachuca qualified for the Champions Cup after winning the 1999 Torneo Invierno, the clubÆs first-ever top-flight championship, coming in the 100th anniversary of the club. After a poor Verano campaign, it returned to the playoffs in the just-ended Invierno campaign — only to fall at home to eventual champion Morelia in the quarterfinals. But Pachuca began the Verano season in style, a 5-3 away demolition of Toluca, before drawing with Necaxa at home. KEY MAN: Cesareo Victorino — Young, effervescent attacking midfielder just rounding into form after a protracted contract dispute delayed the start of his season last year. Counted to provide the spark and work for the Pachuca attack. Joe Public suffered through a trophy-less 2000 season, finishing third in the domestic campaign, losing in the FA Cup final and losing in the semifinals of the League Cup. But it again shined on the continental stage, winning a third consecutive Caribbean club championship. The team just began training again after the New Year with a new coach, Yugoslav-born Zoran Vranes re-taking the reins, returning to Trinidad & Tobago after coaching the Antigua & Barbuda national team. KEY MAN: Arnold Dwarika — First-choice striker for the Trinidad & Tobago national team, has been Joe PublicÆs leading goalgetter for the past two seasons after returning from Scotland.
