New England Revolution coach Thomas Rongen has been added to the U.S. World Cup coaching staff and will serve as one of Steve Sampson’s assistants in France, joining Clive Charles and Miolutin Soskic. “We are very fortunate to have someone of Thomas’ caliber with this World Cup team,” said Sampson. “He has demonstrated with both New England and Tampa Bay that he is extremely effective in getting the most out of his players. His presence will only add to our competitive level and make us a better team in France. Rongen first served as Sampson’s assistant in a June, 1997 match against Israel in Jacksonville, Fla. During the second half of CONCACAF qualifying last year, Sampson called upon Rongen to join the U.S. team for several important matches. The U.S. team is scheduled to depart for France on June 4.
