Toronto FC will introduce Canadian national team star Julian De Guzman as the club’s first Designated Player at a press conference today . The multi-million dollar signing is expected to help TFC make a serious push toward playoff contention. The club failed to reach the MLS playoffs in its first two seasons.

De Guzman, 28, joins TFC after a lengthy and successful career in Europe, where he played in Germany and Spain. The midfielder says he passed up offers in Europe to return to his home country as the new face of a franchise in need of a marquee player. “He won’t score goals, but his work rate, leadership skills and vision will provide a boost that should help a TFC squad that was lacking a bit of fire in the lineup,” writes Galarcep. TFC currently sits fifth place in the East, two points out of a playoff spot.
