Think you got what it takes to play in Major League Soccer? Well, if you live near Toronto, Ontario, Canada all you need is 115 Canadian dollars ($102) for your chance to prove it. MLS expansion team Toronto FC is holding an open tryout for players 14 and over Dec. 18-22 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in the Toronto suburb of Vaughan. Do it fast, though, tryouts are limited to the first 1,000 players who sign up at www.torontofc.ca. It’s an interesting idea for the expansion team, which expects to earn 115,000 Canadian dollars ($102,000) if the maximum number of people sign up. Paul Bierne, the club’s business operations manage, said the fee covers the club’s expenses for putting on the event, which includes staffing, insurance and renting the facility. Crucially, the expansion team will need to acquire players beyond what they get from next week’s MLS Expansion Draft. Participants in the Toronto tryout receive a T-shirt and two tickets to a Toronto FC game. The team, the 13th in MLS, will begin play next spring in the brand-new 20,000-seat BMO Field at Exhibition Palace.
