Mia Hamm scored two spectacular goals and Tiffeny Milbrett added a goal and an assist, as the U.S. women’s national team defeated Iceland, 6-0 May 8 before a capacity crowd at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. The U.S., which scored 15 goals in a pair of recent wins over Argentina, needed just three minutes to get on the board, as Tiffeny Milbrett took a poor Iceland clearance and smacked a first-time shot into the upper left corner from 18 yards. The U.S. dominated the match, outshooting Iceland 35-1, and increased its lead in the 32nd minute when Hamm scored directly off a corner kick that slammed off the far post and into the net. Nine minutes later, Milbrett took a ball at the left side of the penalty box and froze her defender with several fakes before lofting a chip into the middle, where Hamm connected with a diving header that bounced off the left post and into the goal. Hamm and Milbrett have combined for ten goals and ten assists in the last three U.S. games. The U.S. made several halftime substitutions, as Sara Whalen, Tisha Venturini and Cindy Parlow entered the match. Whalen preceded to score her first international goal just two minutes into the half. Hamm sliced through the Iceland box and pushed a pass to the former UConn star at the far post, where she bounced a left-footed shot into the left corner. Venturini also got into the scoring act, sending a 25-yard blast off the crossbar and down onto the goal line in the 58th minute. The ball was then knocked out by Iceland keeper Sigridur Palsdottir, but referee Richard Grady ruled that the ball had crossed the line for the fifth American goal. Debbie Keller struck the final U.S. goal just six minutes later, running onto Kristine Lilly’s free kick in the left side of the penalty box and rolling a shot into the right corner from eight yards. The U.S., despite it’s dominance, was unable to score in the remaining 26 minutes of play. “There were some impressive displays of attacking soccer tonight,” said U.S. coach Tony DiCicco. “But there were also some periods of lethargic play. Still, Mia and Tiffeny looked dynamic once again and Cindy Parlow and Debbie Keller came off the bench and played well at forward in the second half.” The two teams are scheduled to meet again on May 10 at Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. The match kicks off at Noon (ET) and will be televised live on espn2. May 8 in Indianapolis USA 6 Iceland 0. Goals: Milbrett 3, Hamm 32, 41, Whalen 47, Venturini 58, Keller 64.
