The U.S. Boys’ U-17 national team will travel to Jamaica in February of 1999 to attempt to qualify for the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand. The American team will play in CONCACAF’s Group A versus Honduras (Feb. 24), Costa Rica (Feb. 26) and host Jamaica (Feb. 28) in the four-team group. All matches will be played at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Group B will be contested in El Salvador’s Cuscatlan Stadium, pitting the host Salvadorans, Mexico, Canada, and a Caribbean team to be determined. The top team in each of the qualifying groups will advance to the World Championship, with the group runners-up competing in a playoff for the final CONCACAF berth at New Zealand ’99. The United States, which is led by goal-scoring sensation Landon Donovan (Redlands, Calif.), is the only country in the world to qualify for every U-17 World Championship since the tournament began in 1985.
