A Landon Donovan penalty kick two minutes from the final whistle salvaged a 1-1 tie for the United States with Poland in its second U-17 World Cup match in Auckland, New Zealand. Donovan was fouled in the penalty area by Wojciech Szymanek in the 88th minute. He took the penalty kick himself and hammered it past Polish keeper Pawel Kapsa. Poland took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute off a penalty kick by Lukasz Madej after Bobby Convey fouled Piotr Brozek. Neither team dominated in the first half of play. Kyle Beckerman had the best U.S. chance when he beat the Polish offside trap on a Bobby Convey pass and faced Kapsa on a one-on-one. But Beckerman shot weakly, wide to the near post. In the second half, Donovan shot wide from close range, DaMarcus Beasley was robbed of the ball by a Polish defender on a breakaway, and Kapsa snatched several dangerous balls in the penalty area. Defender Oguchi Onyewu, who served a one-game suspension following his red card in the 94th minute against New Zealand, is eligible to play against Uruguay. Uruguay comes off a 5-0 rout of New Zealand in the other Group A game played today. The USA plays Uruguay Nov. 16, 2:15 am ET.
