To survive in MLS, the basic understanding goes that a team needs its own soccer-specific stadium. But to really thrive financially within the league, it seems a team needs a stadium that’s also jam-packed with other sports and entertainment events. I mean, who can’t use a little extra cash on the side?
So it’s promising for the future of a proposed D.C. United stadium in Prince George’s County that a report commissioned last year by the Maryland Sports Authority recently revealed data that suggested the new complex would be a hotbed of activity, “with the team’s games making up only about a quarter of the total number of events at the facility,” according to the Washington Times.
Expected to draw between 53 and 64 total events (including future Washington Freedom WPS games), the venue would rival other always-busy complexes in Chicago, Dallas and L.A., with a projected annual attendance of 841,000 the second highest of all soccer-specific stadiums behind only L.A. and its trio of tenants (Galaxy, Chivas and Sol).
