Uruguay scored three goals in a 17-minute span of the first half and held on for a 3-0 victory over the USA in a second round match at the World Youth Championship in Malaysia. The loss eliminates the U.S. from the competition. Marcelo Zalayeta scored twice for Uruguay, which pressured the U.S. from the outset. After near misses in the 19th, 20th and 22nd minutes, Zalayeta latched onto a pass from teammate Cesar Pellegrin at the top of the penalty area and drilled a shot past U.S. keeper Andy Kirk to put the South Americans on top. Ten minutes later, Pellegrin took a free kick from 35 yards out, which Kirk charged; however, Zalayeta bodied the U.S. keeper and the ball went through Kirk’s hands, allowing the Uruguayan an easy finish for a 2-0 lead. The final goal came on a 3-on-2 breakaway. Pellegrin made a nifty pass between U.S. defenders Brian Dunseth and John O’Brien, and Nicolas Olivera turned and shot past Kirk in one motion. “I thought Uruguay was very good, especially in the first half,” said U.S. coach Jay Hoffman. “They capitalized on the opportunities we gave them. I didn’t think our first half was very good and perhaps we gave them too much respect.” June 25 in Shah Alam Urugauy 3 USA 0. Goals: Zalayeta 23, 33, Olivera 40.
