American Paul Caligiuri’s days at German First Division club St. Pauli appear numbered.

He’s played only one game — as a second-half substitute — in the last month, and he’s been left off the roster for the Hamburg club’s final game before the winter break against Uerdingen Dec. 8.

Following St. Pauli’s game with Karlsruhe Dec. 2, the German magazine kicker‘s headline was “Caligiuri can pack his bags.”

Caligiuri, who debuted in the First Division in August, is on loan to St. Pauli from the USISL’s Los Angeles Salsa. The German club must decide what to do with Caligiuri before the end of the year.

Caligiuri has been with four other German clubs: Hamburg, Meppen, Hansa Rostock, and Freiburg. He never played for Hamburg. He played for Meppen and Freiburg in the German Bundesliga 2 and won the last East German First Division title with Hansa Rostock in 1991.

Caligiuri isn’t the only American defender on the bench. Alexi Lalas was dropped for the first time in his two years in Italy when he did not play in Padova’s 1-0 loss to Fiorentina Dec. 3.
