Blackburn thrilled its home crowd with its first victory over Manchester United in eight years, a 1-0 win. Jonny Walker's team, Universidad Catolica, meanwhile, fell short of winning its second Chilean title this year.
CHILE
*Jonny Walker (Universidad Catolica, D1) vs. Colo Colo, 2-3.
Started: 90 minutes. Red cards doomed Catolica's bid to be ''bi-campeon'' as Colo Colo captured Chile's Clausura championship. Catolica, which won the Apertura in June, lost its defensive general, Miguel Ramirez, to a red card in the 14th minute of Wednesday's first leg, a 2-0 loss.
Facing Colo Colo without Ramirez and with a two-goal deficit was a tall enough task, but midfielders Jorge Acuna and Daniel Perez got themselves ejected in the 35th and 37th minutes, respectively, in Sunday's return leg.
Their errors in judgment ruined an afternoon that started right when Pablo Lenci put Catolica ahead in the 8th minute. But Walker tackled wide-open Luis Ignacio Quinteros in the 14th minute and Marcelo Espina converted the ensuing penalty kick for Colo Colo. Manuel Neira added insurance tallies in the 67th and 73rd minutes before Albert Acevedo got a consolation goal in the 88th minute.
ENGLAND * Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL) vs. Manchester United, 1-0.
Started: 90 minutes. United's surge toward the top of the standings hit a stumbling block at Ewood Park as Gary Flitcroft's 40th-minute tally held up against the visitors, who had won eight in a row.
Poor finishing by Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Diego Forlan combined with a steady performance by Friedel and his defense resulted in the shutout. The three points keeps Blackburn in ninth place, one point behind Tottenham.
* Kasey Keller (Tottenham, PL) vs. Manchester City, Monday.
* Jovan Kirovski (Birmingham, PL) vs. Charlton, 1-1.
Started: 90 minutes. After coming off the bench much of the season, Kirovski was rewarded for last week's game-winning goal with a start. He continued his strong play and is likely to stay in the first 11 because of his team's disciplinary problems. Striker Geoff Horsfield was sent off in the 54th minute for a harsh challenge while midfielders Aliou Cisse and Oliver Tebily must sit out the next match due to yellow card accumulation. Nine cautions were issued in this match, six in the last 15 minutes.
* Eddie Lewis (Preston North End, D1) at Sheffield United, 0-1.
Started: 90 minutes.
FRANCE
* David Regis (Troyes, D1) at Auxerre, postponed to Jan 11.
* Greg Vanney (Bastia, D1) at Monaco, postponed to Jan. 11.
GERMANY
On winter break.
NETHERLANDS
* John O'Brien (Ajax, D1) at Excelsior, 2-0.
DNP – injured.
* Earnie Stewart (NAC Breda, D1) vs. Feyenoord, 1-1.
Started: 81 minutes. Breda got its equalizer five minutes after Stewart left the game.
