On the 21st game day of the German First Division 2001-2002 season, struggling St. Pauli pulled a major upset — defeating Bayern Munich, 2-1, in St. Pauli. U.S. defender Cory Gibbs started on defense for St. Pauli. Dema Kovalenko, who joined St. Pauli on loan during the winter break, made his third straight start on the right flank. The win marked St. Pauli’s third of the season and pulled it out of last place, thanks to FC Cologne’s 4-0 loss to Borussia Moenchengladbach. Gibbs and Kovalenko both played the whole 90 minutes. Tony Sanneh, whose Nuremberg team is also in relegation danger, won its second straight game — a 3-2 away win over VfB Stuttgart. Sanneh played the whole 90 minutes at right back.
