Started: 90 minutes. Blackburn's bid to repeat as League Cup champion when up in smoke when it fell to Manchester United at home, to go out, 4-2, on aggregate. Blackburn had a two-goal lead on aggregate before a pair of Paul Scholes goals put United ahead. Ruud Van Nistelrooy sealed the series when he converted a penalty after Friedel hauled him down. Friedel was only cautioned for the offense.
FRANCE (LEAGUE)

Started: 56 minutes. L'Equipe rating (10=high; 1=low); 4.5. Regis remained in the starting lineup as Faruk Hadzibegic tries to shake things up at last-place Troyes.
* Greg Vanney (Bastia, D1), at Rennes, 1-0.
DNP. Bastia got its first win of the year on the road after seven losses and three ties in 10 games. Arrival of Gregory Vignal on loan from Liverpool signals that Vanney may be finished at Corsica.
* Oguchi Onyewu (Metz, D2), at Lorient, 0-2.
Started: 90 minutes. Onyewu went all the way in midfield in his French league debut. Metz fell to seventh place, three points behind third-place Chateauroux. The top three teams go up.
