Of the four American goalies starting in the English League, only Mike Ammann is playing on a team with a winning record.

Ammann, who has split time much of the year in goal with Mike Salmon, recorded the shutout in Charlton’s 1-0 win at Norwich March 30 to solidify its hold on fourth place in the English First Division. Charlton should advance to the four-team promotion playoffs, where the winner advances to the Premier League in 1996-97.

The other three American goalies in the English League are Juergen Sommer (QPR, tied for 18th in the 20-team Premier League), Kasey Keller (Millwall, tied for 16th in 24-team First Division) and Ian Feuer (Luton, 23rd in First Division).

Thomas Dooley scored his first goal of the season with German First Division club Schalke in a 3-0 win over Freiburg March 30.

The win moved Schalke into a tie for fourth place with VfB Stuttgart. Dooley, who was named to the kicker Team of the Week for his performance in the Freiburg game, returned to the starting lineup this spring after missing much of the fall with injuries. Dooley has 18 goals in nine seasons in the German First Division.

Claudio Reyna remained in the starting lineup at German First Division club Bayer Leverkusen, which lost 2-1 at Werder Bremen March 30.

Reyna, who has been asked to take on significant defensive duties, was upset, however, at being substituted in the second half with Leverkusen looking for the tying goal. Reyna had set up Brazilian Paulo Sergio the week before against Bayern Munich with a goal being called one of the best of the German season.

Tab Ramos and Mike Sorber have clinched spots in the 10-team Mexican First Division playoffs with clubs UNL and UNAM, respectively.

Fellow American Marcelo Balboa plays for Leon, which will make the playoffs if it wins its final game of the regular season and Monterrey ties or loses.

The four-week playoffs begin April 10.

The three Americans will join their MLS clubs after their clubs are eliminated from the playoffs: Ramos (MetroStars), Sorber (Kansas City) and Balboa (Colorado).
