This year’s early World Cup has pushed a lot of league and cup activity in Europe into midweek in January. David Regis played all 90 minutes for Metz in a 2-1 win at Bastia. The game was the first since veteran coach Gilbert Gress replaced Albert Cartier. Greg Vanney, Regis’ backup on the U.S. national team, did not play for the Corsicans. Tottenham’s 5-1 win over Chelsea in the second leg of the English League Cup semifinals moved Spurs into the Feb. 24 final with a 6-3 aggregate win. It also set up the possibility of an all-American showdown in goal. Kasey Keller’s last start for Spurs was in the first leg at Stamford Bridge. Brad Friedel has already led Blackburn into the final. Steve Cherundolo and Conor Casey both played in Second Division Hannover’s 2-1 loss to First Division co-leader Bayer Leverkusen in the third round of the German Cup. Cherundolo played all 90 minutes and received a yellow card; Casey came on as a sub in the 75th minute.
