After months of uncertainty, U.S. World Cup veterans Eddie Lewis and Gregg Berhalter finally debuted for their respective new clubs. Lewis helped Preston North End move past feisty Scunthorpe in England's League Cup while Berhalter started as a marking back for Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga in a 3-1 victory against Hannover 96 and fellow American Steve Cherundolo.
ENGLAND
* Brad Friedel (Blackburn, PL) vs. Chelsea, 2-3.
Started: 90 minutes. Blackburn couldn't even manage the tie at home as Gianfranco Zola's breathtaking strike into the top corner decided the game in the 80th minute. It was Zola's second goal of the game.
* Kasey Keller (Tottenham, PL) at Fulham, 2-3.
Started: 90 minutes. Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute on a Teddy Sheringham strike, Tottenham fell apart defensively and lost. Junichi Inamoto halved Fulham's deficit in the 68th minute, then steady pressure resulted in an 84th minute penalty kick that Steed Malbranque converted. Keller made two superb stops from then until injury time, when Sylvain Legwinski broke through alone and capped the home team's rally.
* Joe-Max Moore (Everton, PL) at Southampton, 0-1.
DNP. Moore is still injured and may need surgery on his right knee.
* Jovan Kirovski (Birmingham, PL) at Liverpool, 2-2.
DNP. While Kirovski still awaits his Premier League debut, his former Crystal Palace teammate Clinton Morrison stole the show with two goals in the last 30 minutes, including the tying goal four minutes into stoppage time.
* Eddie Lewis (Preston North End, D1) vs. Scunthorpe, 2-1 (ET).
Started: 120 minutes. In his debut for Preston, Lewis looked promising, but did not factor into either of his team's goals. Unfortunately, his most notable play according to the club's web site came in the 35th minute when he got a break towards goal but slipped as he took a 25-yard shot that dribbled to the Scunthorpe goalkeeper. Jamaican Ricardo Fuller scored the game winner in the 116th minute, but in the League Cup there is no golden goal, so the final four minutes were tense as PNE held on.
GERMANY
* Gregg Berhalter (Energie Cottbus, D1) at Hannover 96, 3-1.
Started: 90 minutes. Berhalter's Bundesliga debut saw him face U.S. national teammate Steve Cherundolo. Berhalter was reported to have given a solid performance as marking back.

DNP.
* Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96, D1) vs. Energie Cottbus, 1-3.
