American goalkeeper Jonny Walker made several saves to help Universidad Catolica of Chile earn a 1-1 tie against Brazilian club Sao Caetano Thursday in Santiago. It was the first match of the knock-out phase of the Copa Libertadores, the prestigious South American club championship. Catolica must now earn a road victory on May 1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Sao Caetano scored in the ninth minute, Catolica equalized 20 minutes later, with both goals coming on goalmouth scrambles. In Holland, John O’Brien’s Ajax squad got a boost when Feyenoord wasted its game in hand by losing to lowly De Graafschap, 1-0. On Tuesday, Brad Friedel and Blackburn missed out on valuable points by allowing Newcastle to rally twice on goals by Alan Shearer to grab a 2-2 tie. In the German second division, Hannover lost 3-2 to Arminia Bielefeld on Monday. Steve Cherundolo and Conor Casey each played 90 minutes and Casey scored in the 19th minute to give Hannover a 2-1 lead. Hannover has already clinched promotion to the Bundesliga, but has not yet sealed the second division title.
