Claudio Reyna had a magnificent game, scoring one goal and setting up two others, as the U.S. defeated Austria 3-0 in a friendly match in Vienna. After Frankie Hejduk’s 54th-minute strike gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead, Austria searched for an equalizer. Both Reinmayr and Amerhauser managed to get free in the U.S. box, but on each occasion, the resulting shot was high. The U.S. then put the game out of reach in the 88th minute, when Reyna’s beautiful backheel pass left Brian McBride all alone outside the left corner of the area. McBride dribbled in and beat the Austrian keeper Wohlfahrt with a low shot to the far corner for a 2-0 lead. Reyna himself added the final tally in stoppage time. Thomas Dooley played a ball to McBride just past midfield. The Columbus Crew forward sent the ball to Jeff Agoos near the left sideline, and he then dropped it back for a streaking Reyna, who took the ball and made a superb cut to his right to elude an Austrian defender before firing a 21-yard shot to the left corner that left keeper Wohlfahrt no chance. The victory snaps a four-game winless streak for the U.S., and is the Americans’ first win in Europe since a 1-0 decision over Iceland in August of 1993. The last U.S. victory “on the continent” was a 2-0 win over Romania in Brasov in August of 1991. A game summary will be posted shortly.
