The United States will return from the Under-17 World Cup without a point after dropping its third straight game. John Ellinger’s Americans fell to Nigeria, 2-0, in Bacolet, Tobago, but the score doesn’t begin to reflect the Eaglets’ dominance. They outshot the Americans, 16-1. After having a terrible game in a 5-2 loss to France, goalie Adam Schuerman played well to limit the Nigerians to two goals. The U.S. made four changes in the starting lineup from the team that took the field in the first two matches. Chefik Simo, Tyson Wahl and Chris Lancos were inserted into the backline, and Paul Johnson took over on the right wing, replacing Santino Quaranta. The United States finished with its second worst performance in a record nine appearances in the U-17 World Cup. At Ecuador ’95, the United States also lost all three games. It had the same goal difference (-5), but the 2001 team edges its ’95 counterparts by virtue of having scored 3 goals vs. 1. “We knew going into this tournament that we would face three very difficult opponents in the first round,” U.S. coach John Ellinger said. “I thought that we played better tonight than we had in our previous two matches. I am very proud of the effort this team put forth in this tournament in the face of tremendous adversity.” Sept. 19 in Bacolet USA 0 Nigeria 2. Goals: NGR – Karimu Shaibu (Joseph Eyimofe) 32.
