Mexico has defeated the USA 2-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Mexico’s second goal was scored by Alberto Garcia Aspe in the 68th minute. After a steal and several quick and nifty passes, Garcia Aspe received the ball about 25 yards out, and his booming shot beat Brad Friedel to the upper left corner of the net.
Friedel kept the U.S. in the match, as he made several brilliant second-half saves. He snared a shot from Carlos Hermosillo in the 61st minute after the high scoring forward had broken through the defense. Friedel also made a fine kick save to thwart Ramon Ramirez in the 82nd minute.
The U.S. had a few scoring chances: Cobi Jones shot just wide two minutes into the half, and Joe-Max Moore’s 54th minute free kick was tipped over the bar by the Mexican keeper, Rios. However, Mexico’s speed and effective counterattacks gave the Tricolores the bulk of the chances.
The Americans will look to score their first goal of the tournament on Wednesday against Denmark at the Rose Bowl.
