Peru has beaten the USA 1-0 in the first match of U.S. Cup ’97 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.
The Americans continued to dominate possession of the ball in the second half, creating numerous scoring chances. However, the U.S. was unable to score.
Substitute Jovan Kirovski floated a fine ball across the goalmouth in the 66th minute, but it was just inches away from the head of the leaping Roy Lassiter.
Perhaps the best American chance of the evening came just three minutes later, when Claudio Reyna made a fine pass to Jason Kreis on the right flank. Kreis volleyed a superb cross into the box, but Alexi Lalas headed over the crossbar.
The U.S. next faces Mexico on Sunday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
