The U.S. national futsal team, which competes internationally in the world’s five-a-side game, will depart on Oct. 10 for Brazil and the Second Rio de Janeiro Futsal Tournament. The event marks the U.S. squad’s second trip to Brazil in 1998, following a third-place finish at the Mundialito de Futsal in January. The four-team, round robin tournament will be played from Oct. 15-18. The USA will play Belgium on Oct. 15, three-time world champion Brazil on Oct. 16 and Holland on Oct. 17. Following the round-robin phase, the top two teams will play for the championship on Oct. 18. U.S. head coach Keith Tozer has finalized his 12-player roster for the tournament. The USA squad features three-time indoor Defender of the Year Sean Bowers and high scoring midfielder Goran Hunjak, both veterans of the 1996 Futsal World Championship, and current members of the Kansas City Wizards of MLS. The team also includes indoor veteran Rusty Troy, a former Major Indoor Soccer League All-Star. In the Mundialito, the team’s only other competition of the year, the Americans finished with a 2-1-1 record, with victories over Italy and Belgium and a spirited 4-4 draw versus Argentina. The Americans lost to eventual tournament winner Brazil. Futsal is played on a basketball-style court, but without walls, in contrast to American indoor soccer. Teams field five players, typically four “field” players and a goalkeeper, and can substitute these players in and out of the match at any time. Here is the U.S. Roster: Goalkeepers — Garth Lagerwey (last club: Dallas Burn, MLS), Doug Petras (Tampa Bay Mutiny, MLS). Defenders — Sean Bowers (Kansas City Wizards, MLS), Glen Carbonara (Milwaukee Wave, NPSL), David Moxom (Milwaukee Wave, NPSL), Rusty Troy (Dallas Sidekicks, PSA). Midfielders — Danny Barber (Buffalo Blizzard, NPSL), Peter Hattrup (Seattle Sounders, A-League), Goran Hunjak (Kansas City Wizards, MLS). Forwards — Todd Dusosky (Milwaukee Wave, NPSL), Brian Loftin (Tampa Bay Mutiny, MLS), Lee Tschantret (Hershey Wildcats, A-League). Coach: Keith Tozer (Milwaukee Wave).
