Tony Sanneh, whose return from a 15-month injury layoff coincided with a five-game Nuremberg winning streak, celebrated promotion back to the German First Division after a 4-3 win over doomed last-place Osnabrueck (Joe Enochs).

Because of injuries, John O'Brien was unable to do much this season to help Ajax clinch its 29th Dutch Honor Division crown, which it sealed with a 2-0 win against NAC Breda.

Clint Mathis helped Hannover 96 halt its recent string of poor results in a 3-0 victory over Frankfurt. The win virtually assures Hannover of staying in Germany's top flight, as it sits five points clear of the relegation line with two games left. Steve Cherundolo sat out because of a red card he received in the previous game.

Gregg Berhalter's Energie Cottbus' 1-1 tie with Luebeck saw it slip to fourth place, one point below the promotion zone.

In England, Kasey Keller may become the only American to play every game of this English Premier League season as he posted a shut out against Blackburn, which was without Brad Friedel because of a groin injury. Tottenham has one game left.

Claudio Reyna's club, Manchester City, may end up the lowest-place team to avoid relegation this season after a loss to Middelsbrough.
