Two stalwarts of the U.S. defense had to be dropped from the roster for the Feb. 6 game against Germany because of injuries. Eddie Pope suffered a strained right hamstring during the January training camp in Orlando, and re-aggravated the injury during the United States’ 0-0 draw with Bolivia on Jan. 24. Jeff Agoos, the most experienced defender in the U.S. squad, has been hampered by lower back pains and is scheduled to undergo a program of rest and rehabilitation. Agoos has represented the United States 89 times since his debut in 1988. Pope has 26 caps since his debut in 1996 and was one of the few Americans praised for his performance against Germany in France ’98, where he held forward Oliver Bierhoff in check. To replace the duo, U.S. coach Bruce Arena has called in Matt McKeon of the Colorado Rapids and Rich Kotschau of the Chicago Fire. Neither has made a previous appearance for the U.S., though McKeon was a member of the Arena-coached 1996 Olympic squad. Also, McKeon was in camp prior to the Bolivia game, but did not make the trip to Santa Cruz. The USA-Germany game at Jacksonville’s Alltel Stadium on Feb. 6 will be televised live on ABC at 1 p.m. ET. Here is the U.S. roster in camp for the Germany game: Goalkeepers — Tony Meola (Kansas City Wizards), Tom Presthus. (D.C. United). Defenders — Rich Kotschau (Chicago Fire), C.J. Brown (Chicago Fire), Robin Fraser (Los Angeles Galaxy), Carlos Llamosa (D.C. United), Matt McKeon (Colorado Rapids).
