Claudio Reyna, the 25-year-old U.S. midfielder who has played in Germany since 1994, is moving to Glasgow Rangers, winner of nine of the last 10 Scottish League titles. VfL Wolfsburg, the German First Division club that has employed Reyna on loan from Bayer Leverkusen for the past two seasons, announced the deal April 1 — but it’s no April Fool’s joke. Reyna, who has played in 48 First Division games and has scored six goals for Wolfsburg, had earlier indicated his desire to leave Germany at the end of the season. But he was expected to move south, to France, Spain or Portugal. Thus the move to Scotland comes as a surprise, but could be explained by the Glasgow club’s deep pockets. Wire service stories out of Germany reported that Wolfsburg general manager Peter Pander said Rangers had agreed to pay $826,400 to his club and $2.76 million to Leverkusen for Reyna’s immediate move to Rangers.
