Forwards Paul Bravo and Brian McBride each scored as the U.S. national team defeated Saudi Arabia, 2-0, to take the bronze medal at the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico. For the Americans, the third- place finish equals the top overall finish for the senior men’s team in a FIFA competition. The 1930 U.S. World Cup Team finished third in Uruguay. “We earned everything we received in this tournament,” said U.S. coach Bruce Arena. “It’s been a great experience for these players to come into this tournament and perform as well as they did under some tough conditions.” With Arena at the helm, the U.S. has amassed a record of 7-1-3 this year, highlighted by impressive victories over France ’98 entrants Germany (twice), Argentina, Chile and Saudi Arabia. Bravo’s game-winning goal came in the 27th minute when he received a long ball from defender Gregg Berhalter. The ball took an unexpected bounce inside the penalty area and squirted past Saudi defender Moshin Harthi. Bravo made no mistake with his opportunity, controlling the ball in the box and slamming a hard shot past the helpless Saudi goalkeeper and to the near post from 8 yards out. The goal was the first of Bravo’s international career in just his fourth international appearance. McBride, meanwhile, tallied his 78th-minute goal on a patented far-post header on a brilliant looping cross from midfielder Eddie Lewis from the left touch line. McBride banged his eighth international goal and his second of the tournament in off the right post from six yards. The U.S. played the final 26 minutes with 10 men after twice-capped defensive midfielder Matt McKeon received consecutive yellow cards in the 57th and 63rd minutes. Earlier in the day Kasey Keller was named to the Confederations Cup’s FIFA All-Star Team, the only American to be named to the team of 16 players despite finishing third in the eight-team tournament. Keller edged out Mexico’s Jorge Campos and Brazil’s Dida as the top goalkeeper in the Confederations Cup. The U.S. concludes the FIFA Confederations Cup with a 3-2 record after defeating New Zealand (2-1), Germany (2-0) and Saudi Arabia (2-0), while losing to Brazil (1-0) and Mexico (1-0; overtime).
