The U.S. national team has the next two days off and will resume training June 3 in New York City. Defenders Marcela Balboa and Alexi Lalas took advantage of the break, returning yesterday to play for their respective MLS teams. Balboa played 82 minutes for the Colorado Rapids, who defeated Kansas City, 2-1. Preki, who played for the Wizards last week, did not return for yesterday’s game; he played most of the second half for the U.S. Saturday against Scotland. In Foxboro, Mass., Lalas played the entire game for the MetroStars, who beat New England in a shootout. Lalas, who played the final eight minutes against Scotland, was one of the more vocal players regarding playing in MLS games. Hejduk Anxious to Return The last three weeks haven’t been easy for Frankie Hejduk. While his teammates have been practicing, showing head coach Steve Sampson why they should start in the team’s World Cup opener against Germany on June 15, the Tampa Bay Mutiny midfielder has been idle because of a hamstring injury. But Hejduk, whose speed and stamina make him a key player in the team’s 3-6-1 formation, has maintained his laid back demeanor, even when Sampson said he might have to drop him from the team. “It’s not too fun watching everyone run around and play, but there’s nothing you can do about it” Hejduk said. “We’re not rushing anything. I’m at 90 percent right now, and will be at 100 percent in another week.” Last Friday, Hejduk practiced with the ball for the first time in nearly three weeks and said he may practice with the team later this week. As for the three-week layoff, Hejduk said he wasn’t concerned about his fitness level. “I’m not a guy who falls out of shape easily,” he said. No Last-Minute Changes After speculating that he might add as many as three different MLS players to the World Cup team at the last minute, Sampson said after Saturday’s game that his roster is final. “I have 22 great players. The 22 I will use are the ones you see (now),” he said. As recently as late last week, Sampson had left open the possibility of calling up players including Roy Lassiter and Tony Sanneh of D.C. United, and Chris Henderson of the Colorado Rapids. The final roster, which will be submitted to FIFA tomorrow, includes 16 MLS players.
