D.C. United midfielder Ben Olsen has been added to the U.S. national team roster and will travel to Kingston, Jamaica, for the match against the host Reggae Boyz Sept. 8. The addition of Olsen increases the U.S. squad to 19 for the Caribbean trip. D.C. had at first refused to release Olsen. With two goals — including the first goal against Germany at the Confederations Cup — in just seven senior national team appearances, Olsen is quickly becoming a viable candidate as a starting wide midfielder in Bruce Arena’s first-choice alignment. Olsen played for Arena for one season each at Virginia and D.C. United. The inclusion of Olsen also increases the number of U-23 players in the current senior squad to five; Olsen joins Chad McCarty, Steve Cherundolo, Chris Albright and Josh Wolff as players who will likely participate in Sydney 2000 Olympic Qualifying.
