Igor Simutenkov's golden goal on a free kick gave the Kansas City Wizards a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire Wednesday night in the final of the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, named for Kansas City investor-operator Lamar Hunt.
The Russian's goal gave the Wizards the first Open Cup title in the club's history. Chicago went down to defeat for the first time in four trips to the final.
Kansas City became the fourth team to win MLS and Open Cup titles after D.C. United, Chicago and Los Angeles.
