After twice recovering from one-goal deficits, U.S. Pro 40 Select fell to the El Paso Patriots 3-2 in a shootout (3-2) April 23 in their A-League debut before 3,200 fans at Socorro Stadium in El Paso. Kirk Wilson scored both goals in regulation for El Paso. The Dallas Burn’s Juan Sastoque and the Kansas City Wizards’ Nino Da Silva scored for U.S. Pro-40 Select. Sastoque and DaSilva also were the lone P-40 players to convert in the shootout. Six U.S. Pro-40 Select players made their professional debuts: Andy Kirk (San Jose Clash), Ben Parry (San Jose Clash), Scott Vermillion (Kansas City Wizards), Andrew Gregor (Columbus Crew), Alen Kozic (Miami Fusion) and Josh Wolff (Chicago Fire). Two other players — Barry Swift (MetroStars) and Matt Napoleon (Miami Fusion) — are expected to make their professional debuts Saturday at Albuquerque. All but Parry and Gregor are Project-40 players. Parry was sent off during the scoreless overtime for a violent tackle. “Our offense came back twice and showed some resilency,” U.S. Pro 40 Select head coach Tim Hankinson said. “We were able to implement some of the ideas that we have been working on. We had some nice combinations that worked well and were able to take some risks in the attack. “I like the way our defense played and how Andy Kirk handled himself. We knew that El Paso would look to counterattack and it would create a great deal of pressure on our defenders. I think our guys in the back complemented themselves well, especially in such a short amount of time.”
