U.S. under-20 national team coach Thomas Rongen said the only way 14-year-old sensation Freddy Adu would be called up for World Youth Championship would be if another player got hurt.

Sure enough, Adu got word from Rongen that he had been called up to the U-20s the same day his signing to an MLS contract was announced at a press conference.

Adu, who scored four goals for the U.S. at the 2003 Under-17 World Cup, replaces San Jose Earthquakes striker Arturo Alvarez, who was ruled out of the U-20 tournament because of a groin injury.

Alvarez, 18, is eligible for the 2005 World Youth Championship. Adu is eligible for the next four U-20 championships, including UAE '03.

The change is subject to FIFA's approval. Teams have until 24 hours before their first game to make changes due to injury.

Adu was scheduled to appear on David Letterman's Late Show on CBS Wednesday. Check local listings for the air time in your area.
