U.S. Soccer Festival ’96, the first competition of its kind featuring 11 men’s and women’s select teams, completed its fourth night of play in San Antonio, Texas, with the South and North in first place in the men’s and women’s competitions, respectively.
The South men won their third straight game, beating the winless North 6-3. Creighton’s Ross Paule led the South with two goals.
The U.S. U-20s, featuring most of the players that finished third at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship this spring, picked up its first win with a 2-0 over the West. Cal State Fullerton’s Joe Digiamarino and Charles Fitchett, a member of German club Mainz’s youth program, got the goals. The tournament marked the return home of Maurice Ligeon, the Club Bruges youth product who played for the full national team under Bora Milutinovic after the 1994 World Cup.
In the women’s competition, the North beat the East 4-1. Paulette Angilecchia had two goals.
The U.S. girls U-16 team tied the South 1-1. The U.S. goal was scored by Moetis Erickson.
The tournament concludes Saturday, Aug. 10, with the men’s and women’s championship games being played at 7:00 and 9:00 pm at Blossom Athletic Center.
