U.S. women’s national team coach April Heinrichs named her 18-player roster for the Algarve Cup. Heinrichs chose 14 World Cup ’99 veterans plus three teenagers and goalkeeper Siri Mullinix for the March 12-18 tournament in Portugal. The U.S. women leave for Europe on March 7. Michelle Akers won’t make the trip. The 34-year-old midfielder underwent nasal surgery on March 6 to correct residual damage from a broken cheekbone suffered last February in the Women’s World All-Star Match. She is expected back for the USA’s next domestic match, on April 8 against Iceland in Charlotte, N.C. Goalkeeper Briana Scurry is also out after injuring her leg in the 2-1 friendly loss to Norway on Feb. 9. Mullinix and 19-year-old North Carolina freshman Jen Branam are the goalies on the Algarve roster. Two more 19-year-olds — Santa Clara’s Danielle Slaton and Penn State’s Christie Welsh — round out the roster. U.S Women’s National Team Roster
