U.S. national team goalkeeper Kasey Keller has undergone minor surgery for a dislocated thumb suffered in training with his English club, Leicester City, and could be out of action for up to four weeks. Keller was taking shots from teammates at the close of practice on Friday when his thumb was bent backwards by the next-to-last shot he faced. “I thought my thumb was just jammed,” he said. “but when I took my glove off and saw the skin ripped open in the palm of my hand, I knew something was wrong.” Keller, who has been superb for both the U.S. and Leicester, will definitely miss the Nov. 2 qualifier against Mexico. Brad Friedel will start, with Juergen Sommer serving as his backup. “The positive side to this setback is that we are very deep at the goalkeeper position,” said U.S. coach Steve Sampson. “I have the utmost confidence in Brad Friedel to step up and take over.” Keller was scheduled to return to the U.S. today to see national team physician Dr. Bert Mandelbaum. He is expected to travel to Mexico City with the U.S. team.
