Striker Danielle Fotopoulos is five months pregnant, keeper Saskia ‘Party Girl’ Webber models for Wilhelmina.
Danielle Fotopoulos didn’t let U.S. national team coach April Heinrichs’ decision to cut her keep her off the field.
Nor did her pregnancy.
The former Florida striker, who is five months pregnant, continued to play up until the last week of June. She still runs and lifts weights to stay ready for WUSA’s start in 2001.
Fotopoulos was one of five U.S. World Cup ’99 veterans, along with Tiffany Roberts, Tisha Venturini, Saskia Webber and Tracy Ducar, cast off when Heinrichs didn’t include them in the Olympic residency camp.
Instead, all five do appearances. Most coach at clinics and camps. Ducar helps out at her alma mater, North Carolina, where her husband, Chris, is the goalkeeper coach. She lifts weights and runs regularly but lately hasn’t touched a ball.
Fotopoulos helps her husband, George, in his job as the new women’s coach at LSU. She’ll be a first-time mom.
“I put off having a family for soccer,” said Fotopoulos, who got pregnant after she realized she wasn’t going to the Olympics. “That’s why I’m excited to have a baby.”
Stellar play in WUSA could put any one of the five back on the national team.
“That’s a huge goal for me to keep fit and keep playing,” Roberts said. “There’s nothing better than playing for your country.”
Venturini and Roberts have dabbled in modeling, but Webber could make it a career. The goalkeeper works for the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency. Webber and Roberts will model for Tommy Hilfiger on an upcoming multiple city tour.
Said Webber, an avowed former tomboy who posed on the cover of a Rutgers media guide wearing a leather jacket and riding a motorcycle, the attention from Wilhelmina and Tommy Hilfiger “was quite a compliment.”
