After two weeks of training in Orlando, Fla., U.S. men’s coach Steve Sampson released 14 players from his original pool of 32 and promoted five U-23 players. The released players are still in consideration for the final 22-man World Cup roster, according to Sampson, but they will not play in the USA-Sweden match Jan. 24. Four players were released because of medical reasons: Paul Caligiuri (flu), Mark Dodd (strained quadriceps), Thomas Dooley (strained calf) and Martin Vasquez (torn medial meniscus). Vasquez returned to Los Angeles, where he underwent arthroscopic surgery Jan. 15 and is expected to be out for three to six weeks. The five promoted players from the U-23 squad include defenders Brian Dunseth, Chad McCarty and Scott Vermillion, as well as midfielders Lazo Alavanja and John O’Brien. They are part of the roster for the Sweden match, along with Claudio Reyna, expected to arrive in Orlando on the evening of Jan. 18. Sampson is also expected to add two more players, including a goalkeeper, next week.
